Vignette Realty's Support for the Special Liberty Project:
Transforming Lives through Nature-Based Healing
Vignette Realty proudly supports the Special Liberty Project (SLP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting veterans, Gold Star families, and individuals who have suffered the loss of loved ones to suicide. Through innovative programs centered around the healing power of nature, SLP has been making a profound impact since its establishment in 2016 by Jessica and Cory Merritt.
Origins and Mission of the Special Liberty Project
Jessica and Cory Merritt’s journey began in high school and evolved as they faced the unique challenges of military life together. During his absences, Cory, a veteran with multiple deployments and a traumatic helicopter crash, inspired Jessica’s unwavering support in caring for their Southern California farm. Recognizing nature’s restorative qualities, they began creating opportunities for veterans through organized hunting trips. Encouraged by the life-changing feedback they received, especially from a veteran's wife whose husband found solace in these experiences, they founded the Special Liberty Project to extend healing to more veterans and their families.
Comprehensive Programs and Services
The Special Liberty Project offers a range of transformative programs aimed at fostering healing and creating a supportive community:
- Healing Veterans: Monthly retreats designed to immerse veterans in nature and facilitate meaningful connections, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
- Healing with Horses: Equine-assisted therapy sessions for veteran spouses that leverage the therapeutic bond between humans and horses for emotional healing.
- Nature Retreats: Wellness retreats specifically tailored for Gold Star widows and mothers feature activities focused on emotional and physical well-being.
- Mini Acts of Kindness are outreach initiatives that provide therapeutic visits with trained miniature horses to veterans and families who cannot attend in-person retreats.
Thanks to generous private donations and sponsorships, all of these life-changing programs are offered at no cost to participants.
Headquarters and Facilities
In 2020, SLP established its headquarters on a serene 30-acre property in Franklin, North Carolina, neighboring the Nantahala National Forest. The retreat center, equipped with “glamping” accommodations, offers a variety of activities including hiking, equine therapy, pottery, and tubing, creating a tranquil environment perfect for healing and reflection.
Impact and Community Engagement
Since its inception, the Special Liberty Project has positively affected over 500 veterans and their families. The organization is committed to cultivating a community where participants can openly share their experiences and build supportive relationships. Jessica Merritt highlights the importance of the strong connections formed during retreats, emphasizing the shared understanding among participants that can lead to profound healing.
